Children’s Book Academy

Children's Book AcademyI just completed the whirlwind 5-week Children’s Book Academy e-course the Craft and Business of Writing Children’s Picture Books. “Completed” is hardly the right word. The five weeks were so jam-packed with information and tips that I felt I was running as fast as I could trying to jump on the caboose of a train leaving the station.  Luckily, we get all the course materials an an ebook and access to the webinar recordings, so I can go back through it more slowly and try to absorb more in the next month or so.

One of the things that made this class so wonderful was the Facebook critique groups. I was paired with a diverse and interesting group of people who were all working on interesting projects and willing to help each other out.  Being able to read a manuscript late at night or while waiting in the doctor’s office made the critique group doable for me. I miss my local crit group but getting to meetings can be a real challenge for me.

Mira Reisberg has such a gentle way of giving you a straight up critique that you feel challenged and nurtured at the same time.  Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen also has great insights into both writing and marketing picture books.  I’m exiting this 5-week whirlwind with 2 picture book manuscripts, an overhauled website, and a renewed commitment to getting my own stories into dummy format and getting them out there in the world.

Thank you Mira and Sudipta for the wonderful brain-stretching course.  And another big thank you for awarding me the Yuyi Morales Scholarship.  It is a huge honor, and I feel I have much to live up to!
